A B C D E
1 BLITZ HARDWARE
2 Employee
Name
Allowances in Ksh Average
Allowance
3 October November December
4 Martin 17,500 15,500 19,500
5 Joel 22,500 20,500 16,500
6 Gerald 18,500 21,500 14,500
7 Paul 13,500 24,500 19,500
8 Total
9 Highest

Write a function that would be used to compute the:

  1. average allowance for Martin;
  2. total allowances for the month of October;
  3. highest allowance for the month of December.

(6 marks)

Worked answer

(i) Average allowance for Martin

Step 1. Martin is on row 4. His three allowances occupy B4:D4.

Step 2. Enter the function in E4:

=AVERAGE(B4:D4)

Step 3. Check the arithmetic:

(17,500 + 15,500 + 19,500) ÷ 3
52,500 ÷ 3 = Ksh 17,500

(ii) Total allowances for October

Step 1. October is column B. The employee allowances occupy B4:B7; row 8 is the total row.

Step 2. Enter the function in B8:

=SUM(B4:B7)

Step 3. Add the four allowances:

17,500 + 22,500 + 18,500 + 13,500
Total = Ksh 72,000

(iii) Highest allowance for December

Step 1. December is column D. The four values occupy D4:D7; row 9 is the highest row.

Step 2. Enter the function in D9:

=MAX(D4:D7)

Step 3. Compare 19,500, 16,500, 14,500 and 19,500.

Highest = Ksh 19,500

Answer required by the question: the three functions. The numerical checks above show why their ranges and results are correct.

SECTION B: ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION (40 marks)

Answer any FOUR the questions from this section.

Question 8(a)

Explain three differences between self employment and salaried employment.

(6 marks)

Worked answer

  1. Income: a self-employed person earns income from the business’s profits, which may vary; a salaried employee receives agreed wages or a salary from an employer.
  2. Control: a self-employed person makes business decisions and organizes the work; a salaried employee works within the employer’s instructions and employment conditions.
  3. Business risk: a self-employed person provides or raises business capital and bears business losses; an employee normally does not bear the employer’s ownership losses, although employment itself may still be insecure.

Question 8(b)

State four economic factors that may promote the growth of small businesses in a country.

(4 marks)

Worked answer

  1. Availability of affordable credit and investment capital.
  2. Growth in customer incomes and demand for goods and services.
  3. Stable prices and a favourable overall economic environment.
  4. Reliable infrastructure, including transport, electricity and communications.

Question 9(a)
