Part 1 of 2

Question 1

An electronic circuit is a structure that directs and controls electric current in order to perform
some useful function. Differentiate between a charge and current.
(2 marks)

Answer

Charge Q is the amount of electric charge, measured in coulombs. Current I is the rate at which charge passes a point, measured in amperes: I = dQ/dt (or Q/t for steady current).

Question 2

A semiconductor is a substance that has resistivity that is in between conductors and
insulators. Outline THREE properties of semiconductors.
(3 marks)

Answer

  1. Resistivity lies between that of good conductors and insulators under ordinary conditions.
  2. Conductivity can be controlled by donor or acceptor doping.
  3. Raising temperature generally increases intrinsic carrier concentration and conductivity, unlike the ordinary temperature trend in metallic conductors.
